Stress-By Clete

In Health, we were working on stress. We watched a video about stress and what it does to your body. Here is a picture of one part if the video.

It showed cave people and the stress that they had. Their choices were to run away or fight. Their muscles tightened, their heart beat faster, and they were breathing faster. We don't have saber tooth tigers, but we have other things that stress us out. Like if a teacher calls on us to read or a test you didn't study for.

We have opinions for what stresses us out or what makes us laugh. We had to circle which Garfield was the same as us when that happens.

One thing that really stresses me out is if a pet or relative dies or if someone spreads a rumor about me.

This part of the video told us the things you can do if you have stress.

p.s.  What do you call a lion standing next to a copy machine?

A copy cat!

When Mrs. B Came-By Braeden

Mrs. B came in our classroom to talk to us about fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. Mrs. B is a nutrition person for our school. She asked us questions about the food groups.

She gave us a MyPlate picture.

We raised our hands to answer more questions and we got to come up and make a salad. The salad had something from each food group.

I got to pour the sunflower seeds in! Then we got to eat the salad.

The salad was very good!

Guide Dog-By Harrison

Today we had a guest speaker come in. His name was Steve and he is blind. He has a dog named Pesto. The dog helps Steve know where he is going. He is a guide for Steve.

Pesto knows commands like Right, Left, Sit, Stay, and Forward.

Steve brought a harness from his old dog and his cane to pass around.

If you see a guide dog, you should always ask the person who owns it if you can pet the dog. The dog is doing its job and might get confused if you pet it. He might get off task.

We had a great afternoon with Steve and Pesto.

Writing Party-By Caleb

We have finished our personal narratives so we had a writing party. We ate a chocolate cupcake and goldfish during the party. We went around reading people's personal narratives. Then we wrote comments on a piece of paper. You were not able to suggest ideas or point out mistakes. You weren't allowed to draw pictures. You could say sentences like "You had a good beginning."

I had a lot of fun! I hope we get more writing parties.

Jobs-By Grant

In our classroom, we have jobs. Some of the jobs are lunch tub, librarians, teacher's assistant, cleaning committee and lots more. Each week we switch jobs. There are 12 positions. You have a job one week, and the next week, you are free.

I am one of the librarians this week. That means at the end of the week, we have to organize the books in the class library. I'll have to take the school library books downstairs tomorrow since it is library day.

My favorite job is the teacher's assistant or lunch tub.

Stamp Multiplication

In math this week, we started exploring multiplication by looking at some real world examples. We started with the grocery store context which Lily blogged about earlier this week. The past few days, we have been looking at stamps. We started by discussing different groups of stamps and how to calculate their total costs. Today, students got to choose how much their stamps were worth, cut out groups of them, figure out a total, and then add designs.

Right now, we are all in very different places as far as our knowledge of multiplication. Some students used the correct multiplication number sentences and solved to get a product. Others are using repeated addition to calculate their totals. This is a wonderful strategy! Our goal for the next few weeks is to understand how multiplication actually works and how to represent it. After that, we will focus more on the facts.

Wash Your Hands!-By Ella

In Health, we were practicing washing our hands. Washing your hands is important so you won't get sick. We put GloGerm on our hands. GloGerm is this orange stuff that glows and it is pretend germs. You can see the germs under a black light. Once we got the GloGerm on, we rubbed our hands together so they were in covered in germs.

After that, we washed our hands and tried to get all the germs off. We had to remember to use soap and dry our hands. Then we put our hands under the black light to see if all the germs were off.

Washing your hands is a way to stay healthy!

Grocery Store Counting-By Lily

In math, we got a piece of paper with a picture of a grocery store on it. Mrs. Fox gave us partners and a big piece of construction paper.

We counted all of the fruit and other products. We were supposed to count it by any way we could think of. We tried not to count by ones. If there was a price on the product, you had to figure out how much it would cost. For example, a box of blueberries cost $4. There were three boxes, so it would cost $12 in all. On the big piece of paper, you had to put how many of each item there were and how much it cost. You also had to show your work so you could explain it to other people.

Tomorrow we are going to look at the posters and share our strategies.
