In the Classroom

We finished our Geometry unit this week and tested on Tuesday. Those tests will come home after Spring Break. We used the rest of the week to review telling time in preparation for the upcoming MAP test. When we return from break, we will begin our next unit over Perimeter and Area. In writing, we have chosen our topics for our opinion pieces. Students will be formulating their reasons, examples, and details to compile an opinion piece.

Friday Folders and Weekly Journals were not completed this week due to Spring Break. They will both resume next week.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break!

In the Classroom

We have been so busy here in room 215! The most exciting thing we did this week was make our ecosystems. Thank you to everyone who donated 2 liter bottles. On Monday, students had the opportunity to build an ecosystem that contains a water level and a soil level. We have a fish, a water snail, and a water plant in the bottom level and worms and grass seed in the top level. Because of the design of the ecosystem, these creatures and plants should be able to survive in this habitat. We have been observing them daily and journaling about our noticings. At the end of next week, we will have a drawing to see who will get to take their groups' ecosystem home. If you do not want your student to participate, please let me know. They are self-sufficient ecosystems, so no action is necessary unless the creatures can no longer survive. Then you would have to properly dispose of the ecosystem. Below are some pictures!

**On Friday, April 24 Paxton Keeley Elementary School will hold its annual Comet Carnival. We will need over 400 volunteers to help “man” games and booths in order to make this evening successful, so we are asking all parents and friends of Paxton Keeley to join us!

Volunteers who spend just 30 minutes at the Comet Carnival will get their name entered to win one of 6 fun gift cards from places like Target, Starbucks, Shakespeare’s Pizza and more! Students, Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Neighbors and Friends are all welcome to help. Please forward this information to anyone who you know who might want to participate. There is no advance preparation necessary. Games and booths come with simple and easy to understand instructions.

Sign up now! It’s easy. Just go to www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0E49AAA829A4FF2-comet1/ and select the class, activity and shift(s) of your choice between the hours of 4:50-8:00 PM. Volunteers will have a great time being a part of this fun community event!

Thank you so much for your help.

In the Classroom

In reading this week, our focus was on biographies. As a class, we learned about famous cellist, Yo Yo Ma. We continued our study of biographies in guided reading. Students compared and contrasted their own lives to those of the people in our books, completed timelines that included major life events, and shared facts and opinions about them. In writing, students have been filling their notebooks with opinion pieces! We focused this week on how to generate ideas. We are almost finished with our Geometry unit. Students studied triangles and quadrilaterals this week.
