There is a form in the Friday folder with your date and time for Parent Teacher Conferences. Please let me know as soon as possible if we need to reschedule. Thank you in advance for helping me reach our 100% attendance goal!

Last week, we visited the Technology Museum in our media center! The students had fun seeing how technology has changed over time and getting to explore. We were able to use a sewing machine, make a phone call on a rotary phone, and even use a pen and quill!

We had our last class with Ms. Zapata for nutrition this week. We learned about the digestive system as well as the 4 taste bud categories of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. Students were able to sample a food from each of these groups.

We had a great Valentine's Day!

In the Classroom

In reading this week, we used an article about innovations to help the deaf or hard of hearing. Students identified important and unimportant information and also used sequencing to determine the order of events.

Students are busy drafting their technology opinion piece. Most students are done with their first draft. We will work on revising, editing, and publishing next week. These pieces will be ready for you to take home at our conference.

In math this week, we continued our focus on multiplication. We used a multiplication/division diagram to help with word problems and used our strategies to solve problems with larger factors. For example, we can solve 5 x 12 by breaking the 12 into a 2 and a 10. Once we solve 5 x 2 and 5 x 10, we can add the products together.

We have continued studying Missouri's role in the Civil War this week. Students have learned about causes of the Civil War, the Missouri Compromise, and Dred Scott. We will do a short health unit next week before starting our Weather Unit.

It is already time to start preparing for Parent-Teacher Conferences! You will find the blue form in the Friday folder. (Some will have a white form as well if your third grader is your only Paxton student.) Please send this form back as soon as possible so I may schedule your conference.

If you need another list of student names for Valentine's cards, please let me know and I will send one home. Students can make a bag/box, but this is optional. We also have extra Valentine cards at school for any students that need them. We will pass them out on Wednesday, February 14th!

Next week is School Counseling Week! We will celebrate by having some fun each day next week. Monday, students are encouraged to wear a hat.

In the Classroom

In reading this week, we started our new unit called Advancements in Technology. We read an article about Shirley Jackson, who invented call waiting and caller i.d. Students also explored how telephones have changed over time. We had lots of fun conversations about what talking on the phone used to be like! : ) We used these articles to practice drawing inferences, finding out the author's point of view, and cause/effect.

We started researching this week for our Opinion Technology writing piece. Students were asked to choose a technological invention they believe is important. So far, we have brainstormed topics and taken notes. We will work on organizing our notes and drafting next week.

We finished Unit 5 in math this week. This unit was heavy on multiplication. Now would be a great time to start practicing the facts. You can help by asking students to skip count by 5's, 4's, etc. There are also many apps or flashcards that would be helpful.

We finished our Force unit this week. Students continued exploring with magnets to find the strongest parts. We also learned about which poles attract and repel. Finally, we studied patterns of forces by looking at swings and trapezes.
