Stamp Multiplication

In math this week, we started exploring multiplication by looking at some real world examples. We started with the grocery store context which Lily blogged about earlier this week. The past few days, we have been looking at stamps. We started by discussing different groups of stamps and how to calculate their total costs. Today, students got to choose how much their stamps were worth, cut out groups of them, figure out a total, and then add designs.

Right now, we are all in very different places as far as our knowledge of multiplication. Some students used the correct multiplication number sentences and solved to get a product. Others are using repeated addition to calculate their totals. This is a wonderful strategy! Our goal for the next few weeks is to understand how multiplication actually works and how to represent it. After that, we will focus more on the facts.
