Announcements

The Comet Carnival is quickly approaching! We needs families to help as much as possible to ensure our carnival is a success. Our class basket for the auction is Gift Card themed. Please use the link below to see more information and sign up.

The Success Ready Checklist will be in the Friday Folders next week. Please remember that students are still learning our routines, so a 2 in any area is where we would expect most 3rd graders to be at this point of the year. I will be reaching out individually if I have concerns that need to be addressed at home.

There is no school Wednesday, September 22, as it is a teacher workday.

Fall Pictures are Monday, September 27.

Our classroom is in need of earbuds. If anyone could donate 1 or multiple pairs, we would be grateful!

We have had many students bringing pop fidgets to class. As these are becoming a distraction, we are no longer going to have them in class. If you believe your child would benefit from a fidget, I have items in the classroom we can try that are less distracting.

In the Classroom

In Social Studies this week, we have focused on the history of Missouri. Students learned about enslaved citizens, as well as those that were free. As this was a particularly deep subject to discuss, I ended with students completing a padlet to express any feelings they were having.

We also learned about historically black settlements and located these on a map. Finally, we discussed the Louisiana Purchase and the impact it had on our state.

We have already touched on so many concepts in math! As one of the students said this week while looking at our word wall, "Wow, look at all we've already learned in 3rd grade!"

We had an introduction to multiplication and division this week. This consisted mostly of analyzing word problems, creating drawings, and recording number models. Students also made a set of fact triangle cards. This is one way to start developing fluency with these facts. Another set of fact triangle cards is in the Friday Folder. Please feel free to have the students cut them out and use them at home!

In reading and writing, students are using their Animal Adaptation magazines to practice a variety of strategies. This week, we learned how to ask and answer questions, connect texts, compare and contrast, and infer. We also took our first reading quiz. Students are beginning to draft an informational/informative essay in writing. We have practiced analyzing the prompt and supporting our writing with details from both print and media sources.
