January 20, 2022

   Announcements

Please note, we do not have school Friday, January 21, Monday, January 24, or Tuesday, January 25. These are not virtual learning days, so no classwork will be given. I did encourage students to do some reading each day and get outside as much as possible. : )

Friday Folders were not sent home today. With our short weeks, we will be taking a break from Weekly Journals. They will return February 4th.

In the Classroom

In our science unit, we have been exploring force. Students created bridges last week out of 2 pieces of paper. We used math cubes to test the strength of our bridge and make adjustments accordingly.

This week, we learned about friction. Students made cardboard slides and used various materials to test which one went down their slide the fastest.

In math, we have been working on multiplication strategies. Last week, we looked at how doubling could be useful to figure out unknown facts. For example, if I am trying to figure out 6 x 8, I can cut one factor in half to make it 3 x 8. With this easier fact, I can calculate the answer and double it to find the product of 6 x 8. This week, we looked patterns across products. We also learned a game called Salute to practice our multiplication and division strategies.

In reading, we are learning about inventions that have helped advance technology. This week, we focused on Thomas Edison. We used an article about him to study sequential events, non-fiction features, and comparing/contrasting.

In writing, students are creating opinion pieces on which of the following they believe is the most important invention: telephone, light bulb, hearing aid, or camera. Students first created their introduction, did research to support their opinion, and are now drafting the rest of their piece.
