Weekly Update-August 26

Announcements

We made it through our first full week of third grade! Students are definitely getting our routine down, and some fabulous learning is taking place.

We do not yet have a Room Parent Coordinator. Please consider signing up for this position. It would involve making sure all slots are filled for the room parties and communicating with volunteers and myself to ensure we are prepared. We also have many slots still available for our first party in October. These parties are a success for our students because of our generous volunteers. Here is the link to sign up for both things.

I hope to see everyone Tuesday evening at Get the Scoop Night! We will begin at 6:30 in the gym with a PTA meeting. Students are encouraged to attend and participate.

Fall Picture Day is coming up on September 8th! The order forms are in the Friday folder.

We are also gearing up for our Comet Carnival! This event is usually held in the Spring, but will be in the Fall this year, on Friday, September 30th. Our class is in charge of face painting. This does not mean you have to be artistic, but just help keep the line orderly and send children in when an artist is available. Please consider signing up to work a shift.

In the Classroom
In math this week, we began our first unit, Numeration. We reviewed place value to the hundreds but also explored the thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands. Students also learned about number lines. Our blogger, Hadleigh, took pictures of students playing Place It.

The third graders also used QR codes to review place value concepts on Friday.

We have not started our spelling units yet, but will in the next few weeks. I am using this time to focus on writing complete sentences, no excuse words, and grammar.

In writing this week, students continued working on their partner interviews. We turned the answers into complete sentences and finished our first drafts.

We also wrote our first Weekly Journal. Make sure to check it out!

In reading this week, our focus was Theme. We read many books and discussed the lesson or message the author was trying to convey. A favorite from this week was A Perfectly Messed Up Story where we learned it's ok to make mistakes and to never give up.

Students also completed the STAR reading test and practiced independent and buddy reading.

We started our Community/Government unit this week. Students learned about American symbols and designed a class flag. We voted on which one we wanted to represent our class and Missy's won!
