Announcements

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Get the Scoop night Tuesday! If you were unable to attend, your third grader should have brought home the information Wednesday afternoon. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to set up a time to meet.

Another thank you to everyone who signed up to help with the Comet Carnival and Fall Room Party! We have a few spots left for the Carnival, so click Here to sign up!

We also have a craft, game, and drinks for our Fall party, but I know the students would love snacks! If you would be willing to send or bring in a snack for the party on October 27, please sign up Here!

Monday is the last day to send in St. Louis Cardinals items for the Carnival auction basket.

We do still have an opening to go on our field trip to the Central Missouri Food Bank on November 2nd. You would need to meet us at the food bank by noon and we will be done by 2:00. Please let me know if you are interested so I can send home the volunteer paperwork.

SNACKS TO THE MAX!
We have been given a way to help supply snacks to our children, by partnering with our Partner in Education, Hy-Vee.   From September 24 to October 7, look for a Snacks to the Max post on the HyVee Facebook page.  For every comment on the post during this time, Hy-Vee will donate a pound of snacks (up to 1000 pounds) to our school.

In the Classroom

Our big focus in math this week was on number story problems. We discussed how to first read the problem, re-read if necessary, form a plan, solve the problem, and check our answer for reasonableness. Students were able to use a variety of tools to solve these problems such as number grids, diagrams, and pictures.

In writing this week, we focused on shows and tells. Students learned how to add to their "tells" by "showing" the reader what they are talking about. Here are some pictures of our bulletin board activity that explains this writing strategy.

We focused on problem and solutions this week in reading. Students also continued practicing their independent reading responses. We will begin reading groups next week.

We finished our first social studies unit this week. Students assessed over the Community/Government unit on Friday. Those tests will be sent home next week. We used the student response system called Plickers to review for this test.
