The Scholastic Book Fair will be virtual this year! Teachers usually get to pick out books for families to purchase and donate to our classroom. As that cannot happen this year, we were asked to set up eWallets that families can donate to. Thank you in advance for helping get books for our classroom!

Here are pictures from our Fall Party last week!

On Thursday, we completed the Paxton Story Walk as a class! The book is called Fry Bread by Kevin Maillard. We first watched a video of the author reading his book to us. He also told us where he came up with the idea and how his family was a huge part of his book.

Then we got outside for our Story Walk! Students were split into small groups and walked around the back track with their adult. Each page of the book was on display, and some had accompanying activities involving art, music, and physical movements. It was the perfect way to spend some time outside enjoying the nice weather!

In the Classroom

Reading and Writing
We started our new reading unit last week called "Ways Characters Shape Stories." So far, we have read 2 fables, a Greek myth about King Midas, and various poems. We have been using these texts to practice inferring as well as identifying key plot events. In writing, we are studying opinion essays. Students will be sharing their opinions and using our reading texts for support. On Friday, we did our independent reading outside.

Math
In math this week, we solved 1 and 2 step number stories. Students used the guide pictured below to solve these problems. We shared strategies and discussed efficiency.

Science
This was our last week of our Ecosystems Science unit. Students chose an animal to research, focusing on their adaptation and habitats.

We will begin our first Social Studies unit next week, Government.

 Announcements

We made it through our first week of in-seat learning! I am so proud of the students for adapting to the new normal of school and being super flexible. We had a wonderful week together getting to know each other, learning, and having fun. Here are a few pictures of our classroom set-up.

Thank you to the families who volunteered to donate snacks and supplies for our Fall Party. I know it is so hard that adults are not allowed in the building, but I promise to take lots of pictures throughout the party and post them here. If you are donating supplies, please send them to school no later than Tuesday, October 27th.

Please make sure students charge their iPads each night so they are ready for us to use the next day. Please also stress to your 3rd grader the importance of wearing their mask.

In the Classroom

Reading and Writing
We finished our first unit this week! Students loved learning all about animal adaptations. We used this magazine to practice finding main idea/details, asking questions, and inferring. We also looked at informational/explanatory essays. Students completed their own essay about animal adaptions using the 3 articles we read.

The magazine and essay are in the Friday folder and are for them to keep at home. We were not able to read the whole thing, and there are some great enrichment activities in the back! We will begin Unit 2 next week.

Math
This week, we wrapped up Unit 1. We took the assessment on Thursday. I made sure to stress to students that I could not teach math the way I wanted which means they could not learn math the way they should. This test is more for my benefit to see what we need to focus on for the rest of the year. We will begin Unit 2 next week. Students also played a multiplication game with their fact triangle cards.

Science
We continued our Ecosystems unit this week. On Thursday, we took advantage of the nice weather to take science outside. (Faulty technology tried to ruin this time, but we still enjoyed it!)
