Announcements

Reminder that Tuesday, January 24th is an early release. Dismissal will be at 12:50. Please let me know by email, note, or by calling the office if your 3rd grader is getting home a different way than usual.

Make sure to read about Ms. Olson in the Friday Folder! She will be our student teacher this semester. We are thrilled to have her join our classroom community.

Make sure to sign up to help with our Valentine's Day party on February 10th!
A list with class names will be coming home next week in the Friday folder.

We have been able to have Mrs. Zapata working with us on nutrition the past few weeks. She works with the MU Extension program and has been teaching us all about the 6 nutrients every Wednesday.

After break, we were able to learn about another country; Brazil! We went on a virtual field trip through the rain forest, read tons of books about the culture, and created our own rain sticks. Students also completed a math break out activity which required solving math problems in order to get out of the Amazon rain forest. We had a great day of fun and learning!

In the Classroom

We have been studying Missouri history for Social Studies. Students have learned about the American Indian tribes that settled here, European explorers, and the Louisiana Purchase. We also studied the Lewis and Clark expedition, as well as Westward Expansion. This week, our focus was on how Missouri came to be a state.

In reading, we started a fiction unit on perspective. Last week, we read stories centered around Cinderella to practice this skill. This week, our story is a folktale about a rabbit and coyote. We used this story to practice finding story elements, recounting details, and comparing point of view.

In writing, students are learning how to write a narrative journal entry. We have looked at many examples of how to write in first person and are gathering evidence from a text source. Students will begin their journal drafts next week.

We finished Unit 4 in math this week. Tests will come home in the next Friday Folder. This unit covered measurement, geometry, and area/perimeter. Our next unit will focus again on multiplication. We will also start learning about fractions.
