In the Classroom

We finished our first Social Studies unit this week by discussing Cultures. We studied characteristics of cultures and then explored those in our classroom. We then focused on the cultures in Missouri. We will begin our Ecosystems unit in science next week.

In reading this week, students have been busy applying their comprehension skills to various texts about animal adaptations. This week, we focused on creating mental images, locating the main idea and key details, and comparing/contrasting using text evidence. We will wrap up this unit next week.

Students have been working hard on their informative/explanatory essays. Our writing prompt asked 3rd graders to describe how fur helps animals survive. After taking notes on the topic last week, we organized our details into paragraphs. We looked at examples of published non-fiction texts that inspired us to write our own introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Next week, we will work on revising, editing, publishing, and celebrating!

Last week, we studied elapsed time in math. We did this by completing a longest day project where students were given the sunrise and sunset times for 12 days. They were asked to calculate the amount of daylight, and then we graphed the results.

This unit ended with an exploration of pan balances and measuring mass.

Unit 1 tests will be in the Friday folder next week.

In the Classroom

In Social Studies, we have been learning studying Geography. Students have identified regions of both our county and state. Students learned about Missouri's neighbors using border state puzzles!

We have also been using a new resource called Studies Weekly. You will find these in the Friday Folder when we are finished with them.

In reading, students have been using articles about animal adaptations to practice certain skills. This week, we learned how to use context clues to figure out unknown words, make mental images when we read, and compare/contrast text. Here are some students working on comparing and contrasting!

Students also learned about digital magazines and comic books from our media specialist, Mrs. Canepa.

In writing, we have been learning how to get information from various sources. We used our animal adaptation magazine, as well as a video. Students are gathering details, examples, and facts in order to write an essay. The prompt is, "How do animals survive in their environment?"

In math, we have studied elapsed time this week. Most students used an open number line to solve these types of questions. We also learned about scaled bar graphs. Students were so excited to begin learning about multiplication this week! Our focus was on the meaning of the operation. We will develop strategies for the different facts as the year continues. Fluency with facts through 10 x 10 is hoped for by the end of the year. We also had a visit from Mrs. Shaw recently. She helps us with anything math, reading, or writing related. Mrs. Shaw gave us a mathematical question about M and M's. Make sure to ask your third grader about the share size bag!
