In the Classroom

We started unit 4 in math this week. So far, we have discussed measuring in inches and centimeters, collecting and sharing data using a line plot, characteristics of polygons, and quadrilaterals. We measured and collected data on our shoe lengths.

Before break, each student chose a famous inventor to research. This week, students completed an outline for a biography about their inventor by using apps and websites for research. We practiced taking notes and gathering interesting information.

On Thursday, we began turning our notes into complete sentences for our biographies. We will continue working on these projects next week and have a completed project to share at the Holiday Open House. Here are some sneak peeks at our introductions!

Our focus in reading this week was on asking questions. Ask your third grader about the difference between thin and thick questions! Each student took part in a guided reading group to practice this skill, and we also read a book about lighthouses as a class.

In science this week we continued our exploration of forces by studying magnetism. Students made predictions and tested what would stick and not stick to a magnet. We learned the scientific names for these categories. We also learned about the poles of a magnet being the strongest part.

We did some role playing to study the interactions between magnets, ferromagnetic objects, and non-ferromagnetic objects.
