Announcements

Please make sure your third grader comes prepared to go outside, as we will try to have outdoor recess as much as possible.

As we have reached the mid-point of the year, it would be a good idea to check in with your third grader about supplies. We have many students saying they no longer have pencils or scissors. They are always welcome to use the community supply I have, but that is also starting to get low.

In the Classroom

In math this week, we focused on fractions and multiplication. Students used fraction circles to identify equal parts as well as equivalent fractions. We also studied the multiplication strategy of using helper facts. For example, to figure out 3 x 9, I can use 2 x 9 and then add another group of 9.

We began working on our expert pieces for our non-fiction writing unit. Students each chose a topic for which they believe they are an expert. We completed our long write on Thursday which means we wrote out all the information we know. Next week, we will start organizing this information into chapters and drafting our book.

I completed two reading assessments with students this week. We will begin guided reading groups next week.

In Social Studies, we started our Geography unit. We began by contributing to a padlet to share what we already know about the word Geography.

Later in the week, we used Google Earth to explore various places. The students especially liked exploring Columbia!
