 Announcements

Thank you to everyone who returned their conference forms. Confirmation dates and times will come home February 20th. Please let me know as soon as possible if we need to reschedule.

We have had so many fun experiences the last few weeks!

A huge shoutout to our wonderful media specialists who created the technology museum this year. This tied to our current reading/writing unit on Advancements in Technology. Students were able to interact with a rotary phone, adding machine, typewriter, record player, overhead projector, and even an Atari! They had a blast learning about technology of the past and comparing it to technology today.

Last week, we celebrated good behavior of our class with a yes day! Students were able to choose their seats for the day, we read with raindrops in the background, and had a special guest (Mr. Fox) come to read his books. The highlight was the karaoke at the end of the day!

In the Classroom

In reading, students used an article about Thomas Edison to practice a variety of strategies. We made inferences, identified and analyzed graphic features, and learned how to use context clues to figure out unknown words.

In writing, students are creating an opinion essay about important technology topics. Most students are in the drafting process. We hope to have finished pieces ready for conferences!

In math, we are revisiting the concepts of multiplication and division. Students are using a variety of strategies to write and solve word problems.

In our Force unit, we have been exploring various methods of pushes and pulls. Students created models of bridges and also studied repeated motion by making trapezes.

In the Classroom

In reading this week, students have been using a play to practice a variety of skills. We have reviewed how to identify story elements like rising action, climax, and resolution. We also discussed making mental images while reading. We will assess over this unit next week.

In writing, students have been creating a narrative journal entry. We read a text called "Rabbit and Coyote." Students are now telling the same story but from a different point of view. We have drafted, edited/revised, and are currently publishing!

In math, we have been focusing on fractions. Students have learned about numerators and denominators, as well as unit fractions. We also practiced finding equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. The previous two weeks, our focus has been on measurement. Here are some pictures of us measuring length, mass, and volume!

We finished our Civil War unit in Social Studies this week. Our focus was on the role Missouri played in the war, including the Dredd Scott court case. Next week, we will begin a Science unit on Force.

After break, we spent time studying Nutrition. We had a guest teacher from the CPS Nutrition department come to make a salad with us that including something from every food group!
