Make sure to join us on May 5th for the Spring Sing! Third grade is performing at 9:40.
Please note there was a change to the calendar for the last day of school. Our last day of school is now Tuesday, May 23. It is also an early dismissal at 12:50 that day.
Some grade levels began MAP testing this week. Third grade begins on May 3rd. We will be testing May 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, and 11th. Please try to avoid appointments during the morning on these days.
We had a fabulous field trip to the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture last week! We learned about the water retention area, went on a tasting tour of their gardens, and held/fed chickens.
In the Classroom
We have been learning all about Government in Social Studies. Students learned about how decisions are made on a local, state, and federal level. We identified the steps for a bill to become a law. We were able to see our government in action at the Capitol on Wednesday! We started by watching part of a committee session, getting to see them vote on a bill, and getting recognized by our representative.
We did a tour of the Capitol building and were able to see the optical illusion paintings. We were also able to explore the museum area.
Finally, we had a lunch picnic by the river complete with our Central Dairy treat!
In reading this week, students compared and contrasted two non-fiction articles. Students also supported an author's point of view. Finally, students shared how character actions impact the plot of a story. We should finish this unit up next week.
In writing this week, students have started drafting their Historical Fiction story. They are including a problem, solution, characters, and dialogue.
In math this week, students have been identifying fractions using a variety of tools. We have used fraction strips, fraction circles, and number lines to find equivalent fractions as well as compare them. We will test over this unit next week.
