Announcements
We will be going to the Rock Bride High School Planetarium on Wednesday, October 12th. We will leave Paxton around 10:30 and return before lunch. Parent volunteers are not needed for this field trip.
Please remember to send in anything St. Louis Cardinals related for our Comet Carnival basket! Monday is the last day to send items in.
In the Classroom
We finished our first Social Studies unit this week by discussing Cultures. We studied characteristics of cultures and then explored those in our classroom. We then focused on the cultures in Missouri. We will begin our Ecosystems unit in science next week.
In reading this week, students have been busy applying their comprehension skills to various texts about animal adaptations. This week, we focused on creating mental images, locating the main idea and key details, and comparing/contrasting using text evidence. We will wrap up this unit next week.
Students have been working hard on their informative/explanatory essays. Our writing prompt asked 3rd graders to describe how fur helps animals survive. After taking notes on the topic last week, we organized our details into paragraphs. We looked at examples of published non-fiction texts that inspired us to write our own introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Next week, we will work on revising, editing, publishing, and celebrating!
Last week, we studied elapsed time in math. We did this by completing a longest day project where students were given the sunrise and sunset times for 12 days. They were asked to calculate the amount of daylight, and then we graphed the results.
This unit ended with an exploration of pan balances and measuring mass.
Unit 1 tests will be in the Friday folder next week.
