Announcements
We took advantage of the gorgeous Earth Day today to have our snack break outside! We did a sound map project where we were quiet and observant to record the sounds around us. It is definitely something the class wants to do again. : )
We have our MAP testing dates scheduled. Please refrain from appointments during the mornings of May 5th-May 12th. It is important students are here on time, as we will begin testing at 8:30 and tardy students will not be allowed in the classroom. They will have to wait in the office and make up their test at a different time.
Please see the flyer in the Friday Folder about the Spring Sing on May 18th!
Last week, we were able to have an Upcycle day in the Makerspace areas. Students were able to create something new with old materials.
To celebrate finishing our read aloud book, No Talking, the students and I had our own "no talking" day last week. We learned to communicate with each other using different methods. There were lots of gestures, facial expressions, and giggles throughout the day! The students were amazing, and we were able to continue our day of learning, just very quietly. : )
Mrs. Hanson got in on the "no talking" fun as well, since we had a week-long robotics unit with her. We learned all about flooding in Missouri and then built and coded a Lego floodgate to open and close based on the time of year.
The students had a wonderful Hawaiian Day a few weeks ago! Thank you to all the families who donated items to help make the day fun.
We had a great time at the Planetarium Thursday! We watched a movie about what happens to an astronaut's body in space and then got to see the night sky during Spring. Ask your 3rd grader about constellations they found!
In the Classroom
In Social Studies, we finished our discussion of the Civil War by learning about the role Missouri played. This week, we continued our study of Missouri by learning about famous people from our state. Each 3rd grader has chosen a famous Missourian to learn more about through a mini-research project.
In Math this week, we went back to developing our knowledge about multiplication. We learned a new game called Factor Bingo. We also used money to practice our division skills.
We started our new Reading and Writing unit this week called "Weather and Climate." For reading, we analyzed a poem called Fairweather Clouds. We used this poem to practice finding the central message as well as to identify metaphors. In writing, students are beginning a research project on a topic related to weather or climate. This week, we brainstormed ideas and studied if a print source is reliable and relevant.
