We had a wonderful field trip to the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture! Students were able to do taste tests of the produce they still had growing including tomatoes, cantaloupe, and peppers. They did a camouflage scavenger hunt in the food forest. Students also learned more about the life cycle of a chicken and were able to hold one. We also tested out the playground!

In the Classroom

In reading, students have been using the myth of King Midas to practice various skills. We have inferred, analyzed plot elements, and studied non-literal language.

In writing, students are using the King Midas myth to compose an opinion piece. Students will be formulating an opinion on the more vivid character. They will be brainstorming character traits and gathering text evidence to support their reasons.

In math, we have been studying multiplication and division. At this point in the year, our focus is on drawing efficient representations of these concepts. For example, drawing an array that shows 3 rows of 5 tally marks and counting by 5 quickly to get a product of 15. We will test over this unit next week so be on the lookout for a review.

We have started our Community/Government unit in Social Studies. Students learned about their place in various communities, as well as the three main levels of government.

The Comet Carnival is quickly approaching! Please see the papers in the Friday folder for more information about our only fundraiser for the year. Also, please considering donating to our class basket. The theme is Ice Cream.

We have a few teacher workdays coming up. Please note there is no school on Monday, September 23rd and Wednesday, October 2-Friday, October 4th

The highlight of our week was the chicks! Students were able to learn about the life cycle by observing the eggs in the incubator, see them hatch, and analyze their adaptations for survival. We loved having our special guests this week!

In the Classroom

In reading this week, students used articles about animal adaptations to practice asking questions, making mental images, and finding the main idea/supporting details.

We started planning for our first writing project this week. Students will be asked to write an essay that answers the prompt, "How does fur help some animals survive?" We will be taking notes and organizing our information before composing our essays.

This week in math, students have begun learning about multiplication and division. These lessons were introductory, as we will go deeper as the year continues. We also collected data and made bar graphs. Ask your 3rd grader about which ice cream flavor had the greatest number of votes in our room!

 Announcements

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks in 3rd grade! Thank you for helping get your 3rd grader back into school routine.

You will find the first optional homework packet in the Friday folder. Third graders are expected to read for at least 20 minutes each night. (Please let me know if you need books sent home.) If you would like your 3rd grader to do additional homework, they can work on this packet throughout the month. I will also send home practice as needed for individual students.

Next week, you will find the first Success Ready Checklist in the Friday folder. Please leave it in the folder and sign. This checklist talks more about behavior and expectations for your 3rd grader and will be done bi-weekly.

Picture Day is Wednesday, September 4th! All students will have their pictures taken. If you would like to order prints, please see the flyer in the Friday folder this week.

Here are some pictures from the first day of 3rd grade!

Last week, we spent time playing games, learning about our classroom, and practicing to meet classroom expectations.

I loved getting to see the 3rd grader's Me Museums last week! We spent time sharing our items with each other and getting to know one another.

If you did not get a chance to sign up at Meet the Teacher, here is the link to help with room parties, Comet Carnival, etc. It does not mean you are assigned to do anything yet. It simply means you would like your email to be included when signups go out and when our classroom needs help with various things throughout the year.

In the Classroom

This week, we spent time reading books together, writing to different prompts, and building our 3rd grade stamina. We also reviewed concepts from 2nd grade to ensure we are ready to begin our official Benchmark units next week!

We have done lots of different math activities this week! Students practiced finding the difference between two numbers, learned about tools like rulers and calculators, and reviewed how to round. Here are pictures of students playing a game called Number Grid Difference.

We have started our Life Cycles unit in Science. This week, we studied the life cycle of various animals and did tons of comparing and contrasting. We even made "flowers and bees" to practice pollination!

Ask your 3rd grader about the special guests we will be getting next week as part of our unit!
